General Summary:  Provides support services for the Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic's functions, occasionally requiring the use of independent judgment. Performs varied outpatient clinical duties. Works closely with the psychiatric provider, interacts directly with patients, records vital signs, and manages large volumes of clinical information.  


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:


Work requires HS diploma/GED and one of the following nationally recognized Medical Assistant certifications/registrations: CMA, CCMA, RMA or NRMA at time of appointment and continually while in position plus at least 6-12 months of relevant medical office experience. Required experience includes: 

  • Skills in clinical data collection/screening with prospective patients;
  • Ability to appropriately triage abnormal lab results;
  • Ability to administer patient symptom screens and appropriately triage results
  • Assistance with prescriptions, prior authorizations, lab orders, and diagnostic requisitions;
  • Accuracy in taking and recording vital signs;
  • Strong organization skills to maintaining patient schedules, incoming and outgoing flow of high volume clinical documents, and patient requests for provider documentation;
  • Access and documentation in an EMR;
  • Familiarity with use of electronic inbox and electronic prescribing;
  • Familiarity with accessing online clinical resources such as the Chesapeake Regional Information System for our Patients (CRISP)
  1. Work requires problem-solving ability sufficient to effectively triage lab results and screening results, manage patient schedule, and prioritize tasks to meet clinic needs.  
  2. Work requires interpersonal skills sufficient to interact tactfully and with sensitivity with patients, families, clinic staff and external parties, and maintain a professional manner at all times (51-80% of work time).
  3. Work requires maintaining records, meeting tight deadlines, concentration, and attention to details, and frequently (21-50% of work time) produces a high level of mental/visual fatigue.

  1. The majority of work time is spent in an outpatient clinic environment, where there is no physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise, or smoke.
  2. Requires the ability to physically intervene in medical and behavioral emergencies; and to transport and lift patients (less than 10% of work time).
  3. Occasional traveling to off-site campuses and locations may be required.

Work requires speaking in person and via telephone, hearing, the ability to mentally and visually focus attention, and the manual dexterity to administer assessments, enter data in computer, and file paper records.
